California NOW endorses Eggman for Assembly

The California National Organization for Women has endorsed Democratic candidate Susan Talamantes Eggman for State Assembly District 13.

Announcing the endorsement, California NOW President Patty Bellasalma stated, “With the state budget cuts disproportionally affecting women and children, there has never been a more important time to ensure the Legislature is filled with advocates for women’s voices as well as communities that have been largely ignored. Susan clearly understands that challenge and our organization is confident that she will work to move our state towards a more level playing field.”

Bellasalma continued, “Susan has a track record on the Stockton City Council as a leader who works with all sides to get things done. She understands that strong leaders can’t turn their backs just because times are hard; we must work within our system of government and with the people we serve to find solutions to the problems our state faces.”

National Night Out Builds Community Strength

The people of San Joaquin County put on an impressive display for National Night Out. In Stockton there were nearly 100 block parties and police, firefighters and city volunteers did their best to visit each of them. There was live music in the streets, massive potlucks, and hundreds of people gathered at parks and on city blocks.

Keeping a personal tradition I began years ago, I had hundreds of cookies made at a local bakery, packaged and prepared for delivery to as many neighborhood gatherings as I could reach. I started with a list of 10, but kept adding more as I drove around the city, visiting Cathedral of the Annunciation, Filipino Center Plaza, Stribley Park, Eden Square, a few locations in Lincoln Village and many more. Friends and volunteers circulated on my behalf in their own neighborhoods and beyond.

This year we visited Tracy, as well. And I hope to make many more visits as Tracy's representative in the State Assembly.

National Night Out is an important part of building strong, healthy communities, growing what each one is capable of doing by growing its capacity to organize. We make friends, but we also take on duties and responsibilities. We start by solving small problems, and soon we're working on the big ones. Not one night a year, but whenever there's a need.

I'll be back out next year, so if I missed you and you'd like a visit in 2013, let me know!
